Road traffic accidents result in
unacceptable human tragedies and economic losses. The number of accidents is much too
high, especially in countries with rapidly growing vehicle fleets. Sweden’s position
in the forefront of road safety work enables SweRoad to mobilise well experienced
resources in the field of improving road safety. Experience has proved that the best way
to attack the road safety problem is to prepare and implement a co-ordinated road safety
programme. This means involving all the various authorities and organizations concerned in
a joint effort aimed at improving the performance of the road network, vehicles and road
