SweRoad's History

SweRoad, the National Swedish Road Consulting AB, was formed 1981 as a subsidiary of the National Swedish Road Administration. In 1982 SweRoad became a limited company owned by the state and administered by the Road Administration. SweRoad’s business idea was to offer Swedish know-how in the transport sectors, mainly roads, on the international market. In the same period, the beginning of the 1980s, a number of similar companies were started on the initiative  of Swedish authorities, such as SwedeRail, SwedAvia and SwedeSurvey, all with the same basic business idea – to offer the know-how of the parent authority on the international market.

An administrative change was due 1 April 2010. Then the Swedish Transport Administration was formed by merging the Swedish Road Administration and the Swedish Railway Administration and parts of some other Swedish authorities. The Swedish Transport Administration thus handles activities and operations previously undertaken by the Swedish Road Administration and the Swedish Railway Administration as well as certain activities of the Swedish Maritime Administration, the Swedish Transport Agency and the Swedish Institute for Transport and Communication Analysis. The new authority is responsible for the long-term planning and development of the national transport system for road, rail, shipping and aviation according to the needs of the society.

The Transport Administration is the government authority responsible for construction and maintenance of state railways and roads in Sweden and for the supervision of government-subsidised municipal and private roads. It also has the overall responsibility for road safety and environmental impacts of the road and railway traffic, public transport, adaptation to the needs of the disabled etc. The whole land transport system including inland waterways, locks and car ferries is thus the responsibility of – and is supervised and monitored by – one and the same government administration.

The administration of  SweRoad has been taken over by the new Swedish Transport Administration. As before, SweRoad has access to their vast manpower resources, technical information, experience and know-how that now also includes railways. This is an important new field for SweRoad that can thereby cover the full range of consulting services in the land transport sectors. A co-operation or merger with the Civil Aviation Administration’s consulting company LFV Aviation Consulting AB has been opened. The combined international consulting services offered will cover almost the whole transport sector.

SweRoad has, for three decades, operated on the international market as a limited company. More than 250 consulting projects have been carried out in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania, Central and South America plus a number of international training courses and seminars in Sweden and abroad. In average the projects have been running for one and a half year and the longest project continued for 11 years.

SweRoad consists of a head office with a small permanent staff for central administration, tendering, acquisition and project management. SweRoad’s projects are usually staffed by specialists recruited from Swedish authorities, employed on a project basis.
